Theatrical releases

Most movies are produced for the big screens of cinemas. Because of we’re cinema lovers, we want to pay tribute to this fact and therefore we operate our own theatrical distribution in Berlin.

The following films had (or will have) theatrical release on the specified dates and have since been screened in selected cinemas:

Character One: Susan

by Tim Lienhard

Susan, in her early 50s, is an wonderfully attractive woman. But the half-Italian, born in the early 1960s in Berlin, is ill. She’s bipolar and schizoaffective. She’s lived a thousand lives, she says proudly into the camera. But her life was actually already over when she was only eleven. That’s when she was sexually abused.

The queen of Berlin’s techno clubs in the 1990s – once a drug dealer and globetrotter – defends her independence to this day.  This comes at a price; because she lives in Berlin on social welfare and has a counselor. A rape during this time throws Susan into a state of anxiety. None the less, she speaks openly and aggressively about all of the things that have happened to her. So this film is a highly topical contribution to the #MeToo debate; an analysis of sexism from the perspective of a beautiful, abused woman. That fact that she suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorders is another of the film’s themes. With her impressive talent for performing and making herself the center of attention, and this in a very strong, self confident, and self reflective way, Susan captivates the film’s maker, Tim Lienhard, who she met 25 years ago at the Love Parade in Berlin.

Searching Eva

by Pia Hellenthal

Eva – 25, drifter, Berliner, poet, pet-owner, sex worker, virgo, recovering addict, housewife, feminist, model – declared privacy an outdated concept at the age of 14. This is the tale of a young woman growing up in the age of the internet, turning the search for oneself into a public spectacle, challenging you on what a woman „should be“. Through her fragmented personalities you see the emergence of a generation, in which the concept of a fixed identity has grown old.

We jump from Berlin to Italy, from Mexico to Athens, as if we clicked through their Instagram profile. We meet her lovers, her father’s new family and her mother, who still lives in the nursery with her parents. Eva runs fashion shows in Paris, is massaged by Sugar Daddies in bourgeois hotels, sprays herself with ketamine in the bathtub, blow-dries the hair of her Greek girlfriend, plays with her cat. Instead of following a narrative thread, the film revolves around themes that Eva’s life raises on its own: Questions about sexuality, gender, the concept of work and a fixed identity. All this is constantly accompanied by her online followers, who comment on each of her life decisions, each new haircut. Eva is cast into doubt, highly praised, declared crazy. The portrait of a modern person.

Datsche

by Lara Hewitt

Valentine, an out-of-work New York actor, travels across the Atlantic in order to discover his German roots and stay at the ‘datsche’ or summer cottage that he inherited from his grandfather. His neighbours in the East German garden allotment colony welcome him with open arms, a lot of curiosity and more rules than he can ever dream to remember. However, not everybody is foreigner-friendly, especially not Gregor, a neighbour with passions for hedge-trimming and nationalism. Which is a problem for Valentine, since he happens to not only have a refugee hiding in his datsche attic, but also an international group of couch-surfing guests about to arrive in his garden…

The movie offers an outsider’s view on Germany, but it is also a film for anyone who has ever loved a place and had to leave it. It is also a swan song from a Brit to the beautiful dream of Europe, a thank you and a goodbye.

Schwimmen | Swimming

by Luzie Loose

The film “Swimming” tells the story of Elisa and Anthea, two very different girls whose friendship gives them support and orientation in a difficult phase of their lives. They become best friends and develop a game in which they record everything they do with their mobile phone cameras. Soon they come up with the idea of turning the camera around and secretly filming their classmates, who have finished Elisa earlier. Their close friendship develops into a destructive dynamic that becomes threatening for everyone who gets in their way. The girls turn from victims into perpetrators.

Elisa and Anthea belong to the first generation to grow up with the Internet, digital images and self-portrayal on the Internet. We watch them develop a bizarre friendship, how they play, search for adventures and cross borders. It is essential for the girls to actively participate in the flood of images that characterizes our everyday lives today. That’s why their mobile videos flow into our film. The material mix creates an individual style – subjective, full of omissions and changes of perspective, close and unpolished.

Kim hat einen Penis | Everything Always All the Time

by Philipp Eichholtz

How does relationship work? What happens if your girlfriend suddenly has a penis? And is love in the end only for idiots?

Kim and Andreas are actually pretty happy – with themselves and their lives. But Kim wants more. She wants a penis. Not because she would like to be a man, but simply because she is curious. However, she does not want to talk to Andreas about it. Dear, she presents him with accomplished facts. Who needs communication, even if it works without it? While Andreas falls into silent action, Kim runs through the lintel through Berlin. To make matters worse, their common best friend Anna with their very own heartbreak and acute desire for children moves in with them. That does not make things easier when talking about your own wishes and needs. Because maybe a penis is never a metaphor – he is already the refrain of their relationship. And if you feel lonely in the end with two, then you are perhaps less alone with three?

Rakete Perelman | Rocket Perelman

by Oliver Alaluukas

How do we want to live together? In the middle of Brandenburg’s nowhere between green meadows, techno and theater ten people answer this question in their own way. In the artists’ colony Rocket Perelman they live their version of freedom and independence – each for themselves and all together.

New in the rocket is Jen. In her mid-twenties she’s out of the city, out of the industry and into a new life. But the rocket needs money and the solution, how could it be otherwise, is in the art, more precisely in a theater production. Jen also gets the lead role in a play that slowly surpasses reality and at some point puts the idealism of the whole community to the test.

Mann im Spagat: Pace, Cowboy, Pace

by Timo Jacobs

For the World Breath Agency Cowboy eagerly tries to clean the breath of the world with homemade bed-chains and levitated water. Well, that should not be a problem in Kreuzberg, the district for star singers. After all, Cowboy has the help of his senior interns. But here, too, the times are changing. Cowboy has to watch the greasy Tschick McQueen and his busy partner Angel open a car courier across the street. Cowboy has to do something about those dirty slings. He plans to build a bike courier service and organize a rally right at the beginning.

But Cowboy’s mission has another reason. Cowboy does not want his mother to end up as a guinea pig in a dull and even dangerous retirement home. His mother is to go to Sohosavoyritz, the invigorating retirement home for BestAgerGutverdiener. There even Elvis is dancing as a laser projection. But cowboy needs money for that; best that of the courier company. As the world’s air center in the shape of the attractive and intelligent Fey van Schweeden sends a representative, Cowboys planning picks up speed. Fey supports cowboy where she can. For this it demands transcendental rethinking. Scattered between his burgeoning love for Fey, the appeal of Angel and his neat penchant for chaos, the rally becomes a race against time. Soon his mother should be taken away from him and these courier drivers really do not do what they should actually: cycling.

Tschick and Angel have cowboy meanwhile rushed the devil from Hermannplatz on the neck. But that’s laughable compared to the huge thundercloud hovering above him, and Cowboy’s ability to trick himself out of the game.

Das Floß! | Floating!

by Julia C. Kaiser

Katha is sure she wants to marry Jana and have a baby with her. But her sandbox friend Charly has come up with something very special: a weekend ‘hen party’ for five, on a raft.

Katha has to learn not to think in conventional patterns; and it’s the most conservative-looking Charly who turns out to be the bearer of this ‘queer’ spirit. The movie tells of intellectual freedom – it should be created with the greatest possible creative freedom. With the raft! I want to tell a story that lives on improvisational authenticity and at the same time on narrative density. The script, served us as a promise – which, however, was allowed to be broken.
