About the film

When the grieving father meets the Palestinian Bassam Aramin, an unlikely friendship develops between the two men. Ten years later, Bassam’s 10-year-old daughter is shot and killed by an Israeli border police officer. But the bond between the two men is strong and withstands this new blow of fate. They continue to work tirelessly for dialogue and reconciliation. When their teenage sons decide to take a different path, their commitment is put to the test once again.

About the director

Florian Mebes studied TV journalism at the Film Academy in Ludwigsburg. After graduating, he lived in Israel for several years and reported for German newspapers, radio stations, and television stations. He focused on social issues that required intensive research. Shortly after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, he was in Israel for ZDF and documented the oppressive mood immediately after the events. Florian has also worked on several documentaries for ARD, ZDF, ARTE, UFA Pro7, and SRF/3Sat. He traveled to Ukraine several times to report on developments following the Russian invasion in February 2022 for German television stations. “Until We Talk” is his first feature-length documentary.

Comments on the film

“An Israeli father and a Palestinian father. Both lose their daughters, one killed by Hamas and the other by the IDF. Their choices and subsequent actions are truly admirable and exemplary. Without justice, there can be no healing. Without healing, forgiveness cannot exist. And without forgiveness, the path to peace is impossible. The documentary Until We Talk is a work that encourages taking those necessary steps — with the eternally wounded voices and hearts of Bassam and Rami. Thank you both for your profound generosity.”

— Javier Bardem, Instagram, 3. November 2025

“The film does not claim that personal encounters can resolve political conflicts. Rather, it shows what it can cost to reach out to the other, even though one’s own life story seems to provide every reason for mistrust and hostility. As ‘Until We Talk’ makes clear, understanding does not require that differences disappear. It begins with a willingness to listen to the other—despite all differences.”

— Florian Stegmaier: A Friendship Against Hate, Kontext Wochenzeitung

“At the end of the film, the two protagonists draw a cautiously positive conclusion. After speaking with thousands of people, Rami is certain: ‘We’ve left our mark on history.’ Especially in light of the recent military escalation around the Gaza Strip—which, after all, calls the duo’s reconciliation efforts into question—their plea for peace takes on particular significance.”

— Reinhard Kleber: The Arduous Path to Reconciliation, Kino-Zeit
