Darling, Berlin! Berlin, Sayang! Berlin, Teerak!

From 6 to 27 December 2020 the Goethe-Instituts Indonesien, Thailand and Malaysia are jointly presenting the online film festival entitled Darling, Berlin! Berlin Sayang! Berlin, Teerak! This year’s program screens six independent from the film label Darling Berlin located in the German capital. The films were mainly made by directors who had only one or two professional films to their credit – young directors who studied at the Film Academy in Berlin and worked in the capital. Their works exhibit great enthusiasm and courage in experimenting with uncompromising visual language and performances by as yet mostly unknown actors.

The filming location Berlin is also of special importance in these stories because this year celebrates the 30th anniversary of the reunification on 3 October 1990 of the formerly divided Germany, which began on 9 November 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall thanks to the peaceful revolution.

The program of the Darling, Berlin! Berlin, Sayang! Berlin, Teerak! film festival offers an exciting insight into the current life of Berlin through a series of characters with diverse backgrounds and desires. In “Datsche” an asylum seeker spends the summer in a typical small garden settlement with the local residents, while “Schwimmen” portrays the lives of today’s teenagers and their interactions with virtual images, nearly 24 hours a day. In “Lotte” we see a strong and mysterious female figure who goes from one apartment to the next, in and out in dark Berlin, and meets people who cannot understand her search for love and discomfort. After Lotte’s loneliness, in “Rocket Perelman” we turn to a theater collective that fights for its existence and at the same time puts the personal lives of its members in the foreground. Will their solidarity be sufficient to overcome their personal ambitions and the demands of an increasingly commercial era?

At first glance the films “Luca tanzt leise” (English title: “Dancing Quietly“) and “Rückenwind von vorn” (English title: “Away You Go“) do not seem to have anything in common. But if you look closely, the paths of the characters in the two films cross. As is often the case in metropolises such as Jakarta, Bangkok or Kuala Lumpur, the inhabitants may unconsciously be part of the same crowd, separating again and continuing their struggle for survival, searching for a place to stay, weighing up their options, whether with or without the people in their lives.

The people responsible for this festival at the Goethe-Institut said: “We are very pleased to present these six feature films to an audience interested in German films in our three countries, especially at a time when many cinemas are still closed. We hope that this online film festival will unite Indonesian, Thai and Malaysian film fans and bring 2020 to a good conclusion across national borders.”

We hope you enjoy Darling, Berlin! Berlin, Sayang! Berlin, Teerak!
