UCM.ONE is pleased to present the world premiere of the 4K digitally restored version of Will Tremper‘s film “The Endless Night” (German original tile: “Die Endlose Nacht“) as part of the Retrospective at the Berlinale. This masterpiece of German cinema from 1963 is characterized by its unique plot and production style. Shot at West Berlin’s Tempelhof Airport under real-life conditions of dense fog that brought air traffic to a standstill, the film follows the experiences of a dozen stranded passengers who are forced to spend the night at the airport. In a series of loosely connected episodes, a multi-faceted picture of society unfolds, characterized by improvised dialogues and authentic character sketches.

With actors such as Karin Hübner, Harald Leipnitz, Hannelore Elsner, Louise Martini and Paul Esser, “The Endless Night” offers an ensemble of credible characters that reflect the spirit of the times. Shot without a fixed script and with original sound in the Tempelhof check-in hall, the film impressively reflects reality and perhaps even indirectly portrays the financial sacrifices that Tremper had to make to realize his project.

The film will be shown in German with English subtitles, has a running time of 85 minutes and is in black and white. Accessible to audiences aged 16 and over, the Berlinale now offers the opportunity to experience this piece of film history in digitally restored quality. The following screenings will take place:

  • On Thursday, February 22 at 7:30pm at Akademie der Künste, with tickets available from February 19 at 10:00am.
  • On Friday, February 23 at 14:30 at Cubix 6, with tickets available from February 20 at 10:00.
  • On Sunday, February 25 at 11:00 am at Cineplex Titania, with tickets also available from February 20 at 10:00 am.

Klaus Lemke said of the film in 2012: “Without Will Tremper‘s “The Endless Night“, German post-war film would be a big mistake. Alongside Godard’s “Out of Breath“, “The Endless Night” is one of the two films that got me into movies”.

1963 German Film Award in Gold: Best Film Music -> Peter Thomas

1963 German Film Award in Gold: Best Cinematography -> Hans Jura
