The Youth Film Jury of the Deutsche Film- und Medienbewertung (English: German Film and Media Rating) has reviewed “Nico” by Eline Gehring and awarded it 4 out of 5 stars – you can read more here: Nico @ Jugend Filmjury der Deutschen Film- und Medienbewertung
Here is an excerpt from the evaluation text written by the children and young people themselves:
“Nico’ is an impressively realistic and tragic film that does not close its eyes to issues such as violence, racism and harassment. The everyday problems of the protagonist are expressively represented with the help of cinematically beautiful images. Stereotypes towards foreign-read people are skilfully taken up, but powerfully refuted. This is accompanied by music, which is more present in certain situations and thus creates tension. With strong characters and intense camera work, the film convinced us and provoked thought. We as the jury recommend the film for ages 12 and up.”
“Nico“, which was released nationwide in cinemas on 12 May 2022 by UCM.ONE on the Darling Berlin label, has already been listed by Vision Kino as a film tip for young people: Nico @ Vision Kino
The film portrays Nico, a German-Persian geriatric nurse who, after a racist attack, decides to train in karate and never be a victim again. The film stars and is produced by Sara Fazilat; “Nico” is also her graduation film at the DFFB. The cinematographer was co-writer Francy Fabritz, who deliberately chose a handheld camera and an improvisational approach. Director Eline Gehring felt it was important to put women at the center and normalize the portrayal of non-white characters. For her portrayal of the main character Nico, Sara Fazilat was awarded in the category “Best Acting Newcomer“ at the 2021 Max Ophüls Preis Film Festival, and the film also received the No Fear Award at First Steps.
Sara Fazilat also won the Bavarian Film Award for “Best Newcomer“ for her acting performance in “Nico” in May 2022 and is currently among the four nominees for the German Film Award for “Best Female Lead“, which will be awarded on 24 June in Berlin.
