Professor Brin und seine Tochter Ariel gehen an Bord des futuristischen U-Boots Nautilus, das nicht nur durch die Ozeane, sondern auch durch die Zeit reisen kann, und nehmen Kurs auf die Vergangenheit. Reaching the era of the experiment is only the first problem; once there they must find the project, convince people who have no reason to believe them, and stay ahead of opponents who intend to see Prometeus completed at any cost. Every move they make risks altering more than they meant to change.
