By the year 2099 the Earth has become barely habitable. The disaster can be traced back a hundred years, to a secret research programme code-named ‚Prometeus‘ that promised inexhaustible energy drawn from the planet’s core and instead set off a chain reaction that wrecked the biosphere. What is left of humanity lives under a hard regime and has one desperate idea left: undo the mistake at its source. Professor Brin and his daughter Ariel board the futuristic submarine Nautilus, a vessel built to move not only through the oceans but through time, and set course for the past. Reaching the era of the experiment is only the first problem; once there they must find the project, convince people who have no reason to believe them, and stay ahead of opponents who intend to see Prometeus completed at any cost. Every move they make risks altering more than they meant to change.
