The film “Captain Roughneck from St. Pauli” (Original German title: “Käpt’n Rauhbein aus St. Pauli“) was shot from 19 April to 1 June 1971 in Hamburg, on the North Sea and on locations in San Felice and Porto. UCM.ONE is now releasing the film by director Rolf Olsen on the U8 Films Berlin label in cooperation with moviemax in the new 4K-scanned and Full-HD-restored version as a Mediabook as well as on Blu-Ray and DVD and on download and streaming portals. This is the first time the original theatrical version has been released in the home entertainment sector, which is a full 15 minutes longer than the old German VHS version and previous DVD releases.

Summary

Full speed ahead into the great adventure! Captain Markus Jolly (Curd Jürgens) – known as Captain Roughneck for short – sails from adventure to adventure with his powerful crew in his old pot “Elfe”. After being acquitted of the manslaughter of his unfaithful wife, Jolly sets off for the South Seas with explosive cargo to deliver urgently needed medicines to a banana republic. But when the cargo is to be unloaded, the boxes are empty, because the drugs have long since been seized by a gang of gangsters who want to sell them as narcotics. The local police suspect the captain of embezzlement and summarily lock him and his boatswain (Heinz Reincke) up in prison.

But the son of a gun can’t be beaten, he breaks out and does everything in his power to put a stop to the gangster gang…

Comments about the movie

“Tailored to the Norman wardrobe Curd Jürgens German adventure film by Rolf Olsen, who was responsible for some partly amusing trash of the 60s and 70s.” (kino.de)

“Oddly enough, an overall impression is established that is a mixture of old joviality and attachment to the “manly” hero of yesteryear, who describes himself as having grown old but still knows what to do and spreads an air of melancholy and sadness around him. Combine that with the fact that the whole thing is set in Puerto Rico and exoticism has always suited Curd.” (Review, filmportal.de)

“A sea dog fights his way through: Curd Jürgens shines as a strong-willed captain.” (fernsehserien.de)

“Jürgen’s positive appearance still makes some other film celebrities seem puny.” (Review, film.terrorverlag.de)
