Many fans have been waiting for this! One of the most legendary horror classics in German film history, “The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism” (German title: Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel”) appears for the first time completely digitally revised and re-sampled in 4K in a limited 4 disc deluxe edition on DVD and Blu-ray plus soundtrack CD. In addition to the excellent cast with Lex Barker (Old Shatterhand), Karin Dor (Edgar Wallace) and Christopher Lee (Dracula), this edition offers great extras such as an audio commentary, an interview with Karin Dor, and the complete soundtrack with new image and sound material by Peter Thomas (including “Raumschiff Orion“, Edgar Wallace, Jerry Cotton) on CD, reports about the shoot or bonus films on another DVD and a chic, 36-page booklet.
The director was the famous Austrian Harald Reinl, who created absolute milestones with “Winnetou 1-3“, “Schatz im Silbersee” or various Edgar Wallace films such as “The frog with the mask” or the war film “U 47 – Kapitänleutnant Prien“!
UCM.ONE, in cooperation with moviemax, is releasing the classic on the film label M-Square Classics today in a deluxe edition strictly limited to 1,200 and numbered for the first time in 4K quality. But if you miss this edition or can’t get one anymore, you won’t have to go home empty-handed. On November 27th the film will also be released as a limited mediabook with 2 discs (Blu-Ray and DVD) without a bonus DVD and without a soundtrack.
The film begins in 1801. Count Regula (Christopher Lee) is quartered for the murder of twelve virgins. Many years later, the lawyer Roger Mont-Elise (Lex Barker) and the attractive Baroness Lilian von Brabant (Karin Dor) received an invitation to the infamous Sander Valley. The drive through ghostly forests takes you directly into the ruins of Count Regula’s castle and his torture chamber. Nobody can yet suspect that the count’s resurrection is being prepared here, but for this he still needs the blood of a thirteenth virgin …
The screenplay was loosely based on the story “The Pit and the Pendulum” by the master of the macabre Edgar Allan Poe.
