Swedish symphonic metal band Zornheym are releasing their third single, “The Funeral March”, today from their upcoming studio album “Descending Into Madness,” which will be released on October 2 via Noble Demon.
Inspired by Frédéric Chopin’s legendary “Funeral March,” Zornheym blends powerful riffs, cinematic orchestration, and subtle Scandinavian folk influences in this new track to create one of the album’s most dramatic and emotional moments.
“‘The Funeral March’ is the perfect blend of classical music and Zornheym’s cinematic symphonic metal sound,” the band explains. “The choir takes on the roles of mourners and pallbearers who lament the tragic fate of Dr. Bettelheim’s beloved wife as they accompany her on her final journey. Lyrically, the song marks the decisive moment in Dr. Bettelheim’s descent into madness, when grief, guilt, and despair finally overwhelm him completely.”
With “Descending Into Madness”, Zornheym expands its complex narrative universe centered around the infamous Zornheim Asylum.
Each release adds new layers to a story that blurs the line between horror, storytelling, and madness – though it’s never entirely clear who the real inmates are.
Zornheym was founded in Stockholm, Sweden, as the ambitious vision of its founder, multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter Zorn (ex-Dark Funeral)—with the goal of bringing his vision of the ultimate concept band to life: a complete fusion of music, narration, and visual storytelling. Since its inception, the band has made it its mission to redefine the classic “metal meets symphony” approach and develop a sound that combines cinematic orchestration with a powerful heavy metal foundation and strong influences from melodic death metal—all underpinned by a keen sense for epic, memorable melodies.
At the heart of Zornheym lies a dark, ever-expanding narrative universe. Each album unfolds within the walls of the Zornheim Mental Asylum—a place full of mystery, madness, and horror—where the institution itself becomes the central character. Across multiple releases, the band explores different eras of its ominous history, told through multi-layered narratives, recurring themes, and hidden connections. This concept was introduced on the debut album “Where Hatred Dwells and Darkness Reigns” (2017) and further expanded upon on the critically acclaimed “The Zornheim Sleep Experiment” (2021), followed by the acoustic EP “The Forgotten Inmates” (2023), which concluded the first chapter of the asylum’s history.
Zornheym’s artistic vision extends far beyond music. Their releases are accompanied by detailed visual concepts and graphic novels that bring the institution and its inmates to life in another dimension, while their music videos are staged as short films, drawing the audience even deeper into the band’s universe. On stage, Zornheym transforms into a theatrical experience, led by frontman Bendler, whose charismatic presence draws the audience deep into the institution’s spell. On special occasions, actors also become part of the performance, elevating the show beyond a traditional concert to a dark, immersive spectacle.
