A decade after its initial release, “Sharknado” will hit German cinemas for the first time in 4K on November 16, 2023 on the M-Square Pictures film label in a new version with the additional title “More Sharks, More ‘Nado!” and with hundreds of new special effects and “Barbie Posters”.
The film, which first aired in 2013, was produced by The Asylum production house and has since gained a wide fan base. In “Sharknado,” Tara Reid, Ian Ziering and John Heard compete against a tornado that picks up giant great white and hammerhead sharks and rains them down on Los Angeles. The film led to a franchise of popular B-movies with a total of six parts.
“Sharknado,” first broadcast on the Syfy Channel in 2013, quickly became a cultural phenomenon, not least due to the massive buzz on social media. After its TV broadcast, the film was shown directly in hundreds of cinemas, with record results for a TV movie. Its unique and seemingly absurd concept – a tornado picking up sharks and dropping them on Los Angeles – caught the attention of viewers and celebrities worldwide.
For the re-release of the film, the producers of The Asylum have created an exclusive special poster in “Barbie” style.
Despite mixed reviews and its classification as a B-movie, its immense popularity led to several sequels and a wide range of merchandising products. This unexpected success impressively demonstrates the influence of social media and the appeal of an original, if whimsical, film concept.
The Asylum is a Los Angeles-based film production and distribution company known especially for its low-budget productions and “mockbusters,” films that mimic popular blockbusters. Founded in 1997, the company has built a reputation for producing low-budget, high entertainment value films quickly. With “Sharknado,” The Asylum scored one of its biggest successes to date, catapulting the studio into the mainstream.

The 10th Anniversary Edition of “Sharknado – More Sharks, More ‘Nado!” Version in 4K will be distributed by UCM.ONE. After the theatrical release, the film will be released on DVD, BD and 4K UHD, among others, in a strictly limited “Barbie cover” and on all major streaming platforms.
