Theatrical releases

Most movies are produced for the big screens of cinemas. Because of we’re cinema lovers, we want to pay tribute to this fact and therefore we operate our own theatrical distribution in Berlin.

The following films had (or will have) theatrical release on the specified dates and have since been screened in selected cinemas:

Coexistence, My Ass!

by Amber Fares

Noam Shuster Eliassi grew up as the figurehead of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process before turning resolutely to stand-up comedy and political satire. But as the region sinks deeper and deeper into devastating violence, she must confront the situation and confront her audience with hard truths that are no laughing matter.

Coexistence, My Ass! by Amber Fares follows Israeli activist and comedian Noam Shuster Eliassi as she creates her comedy show of the same name. The film, which was shot over a period of five turbulent years, traces Noam’s personal, professional and political development against the backdrop of the steadily deteriorating situation in the region. Growing up in a bilingual Israeli-Palestinian village – the only consciously integrated community in the country – Noam increasingly loses faith in traditional peace activism. She turns to stand-up comedy and quickly attracts attention across the Middle East. But as her star rises, everything around her comes crashing down. With biting satire, Noam confronts her audience with difficult truths that are not always funny, but remind us that a different reality is possible.

Never Alone | Nie Allein

by Klaus Härö

During the Second World War, Jewish people sought refuge far away. In Finland, too, some of them hoped for a new beginning. However, Finland’s alliance with Nazi Germany threatened to escalate the situation when Jewish refugees were forcibly deported to German concentration camps. Abraham Stiller, a respected member of the Jewish community in Finland, cannot stand idly by. The textile manufacturer does everything in his power to accommodate the refugees in his production facilities in order to protect them, but in doing so, he increasingly reaches his own limits.

Based on true events, Finnish director Klaus Härö tells the moving story of an unwavering hero who risked everything to save the lives of Jewish people. “Never Alone” is a powerful film about courage, resilience and bravery.

Darlings

by Lea de Boor & Steffen Maurer

Lena, a young primary school teacher from Berlin, accompanies her partner Ole to his home village. What begins as a relaxing break in the winter idyll soon turns into a nightmare. In the company of his old clique, Ole changes and reveals oppressive patterns of behavior. A violent dynamic develops that not only causes their relationship to falter, but also becomes increasingly dangerous for Lena.

Darlings attempts to address the destructive effects of patriarchal behavior with great sensitivity. The thriller sheds light on complex power relations in romantic relationships and shows their far-reaching consequences.

The film is based on a 20-page script and was developed in an intensive rehearsal process with the actors before and during filming – this way of working gave the director the opportunity to reveal the inner worlds of the protagonists in a tangibly authentic and unadulterated way.

Good News

by Hannes Schilling

Leo travels to the south of Thailand, driven by the hope of an international breakthrough as a journalist. There he wants to report on a secret rebel group. During his research, he spends time with his friend Mawar, who dreams of a better life in Germany. The encounters with Mawar’s family awaken painful memories in Leo of his own life left behind in Berlin – and of his daughter, with whom contact is threatening to slip away. Under pressure, Leo makes a momentous decision: he writes his article without ever having spoken to the rebels. When photographer Julian turns up shortly afterwards, Leo begins a moral descent.

Good News impressively illuminates the inner and outer conflicts that journalists are confronted with when professional ambition collides with ethical principles. The film sensitively explores the boundaries between integrity and career ambition, loyalty and deception – and poses the central question: how far can you go to achieve professional and personal goals?
