On Saturday 05, November 2022 at 6 pm, the “Rothenburger Märchenzauber” will be showing the film “The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism” (German title: “Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel“) in its 10th anniversary at the Filmpalast Forum Rothenburg. In cooperation with moviemax and the Filmpalast Ballhaus Forum Rothenburg, the German scary classic will finally be shown again where its exterior shots were filmed at the time.

After the cinema screening, the lecture “Die Schlangengrube und das Pendel – Rothenburg wird zur Metropole des Grauens” (English translation: “The snake pit and the pendulum – Rothenburg becomes a metropolis of horror”) by Fabian Pleiser will take place on Sunday, 06.11.2022 at 17:30.
The film begins in 1801, when Count Regula (Christopher Lee) is quartered for the murder of twelve virgins. Many years later, the lawyer Roger Mont-Elise (Lex Barker) and the attractive Baroness Lilian von Brabant (Karin Dor) receive an invitation to the disreputable Sander Valley. The journey through spooky forests leads them directly to the ruins of Count Regula’s castle and its torture chamber. No one can yet suspect that the count’s resurrection is being prepared here, but he still needs the blood of a thirteenth virgin for this…
The film was directed by the famous Austrian Harald Reinl, who created absolute milestones with “Winnetou 1-3” or various Edgar Wallace films such as “Der Frosch mit der Maske” or also the war film “U 47 – Kapitänleutnant Prien“! The script was loosely based on the story “The Pit and the Pendulum” by the master of the macabre Edgar Allan Poe.
