Marianas Rest have released a brand-new lyric video for ‘Rat In The Wall’, featuring Okko Solanterä (Horizon Ignited). The track is taken from their latest studio album, ‘The Bereaved’, which was released in January via Noble Demon.
Following the album’s release, ‘The Bereaved’ entered the Finnish album charts at number three, marking Marianas Rest’s fourth consecutive top-10 release. After an extensive tour of Finland and performances in major Central European cities, the band is now back with a new lyric video as they prepare for upcoming festival appearances.
‘Rat In The Wall’ combines raw power with the band’s characteristic melancholic atmosphere, once again highlighting Marianas Rest’s ability to blend dark intensity with haunting melodic depth.
Marianas Rest comment on the song’s creation process as follows: ““Rat in the Wall” came about through a very classic Marianas Rest songwriting process. We recorded countless different melodies, harmonies and instrumental parts as demos and experimented with various ideas. When it was finally time to finish the song, the main focus was on selecting the right combinations of melodies and passages to create the right atmosphere. The song’s intro is quite unusual and uncharacteristic of us, and it came about when we were playing around with the feedback controls on a delay pedal during recording. We thought it sounded cool.“
Singer Jaakko Mäntymaa offers some insight into the song’s lyrical theme: “If you’ve ever tried to save someone from themselves, you’ll probably understand what this song is about. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. But it’s always worth the effort. We wrote the lyrics together with Okko Solanterä (Horizon Ignited, I Am The Night, Slaughterror). We were so much on the same page that the whole process almost happened by itself. The struggle is real, and I think you can hear that in the song.“
From the dark shores of the Baltic Sea, Marianas Rest channel the deep melancholy of their homeland. Hailing from the south-eastern Finnish city of Kotka, the band was formed in 2013 and has since established itself as a leading force in the world of melancholic death metal. Their music is heavy and unhurried, blending elements of doom, death and post-metal into a sound that is both oppressive and beautiful. Marianas Rest don’t just write songs – they create atmospheres: haunting, immersive and emotionally shattering. A journey into darkness that, strangely enough, feels both familiar and comforting.
Marianas Rest’s fifth album, ‘The Bereaved’, is a deeply personal account of death and the many forms in which the end can take. We find the band in the midst of a memorial service, tormented by the questions of what should have been done or left undone – questions known only to those left behind. For sometimes, sympathy is directed towards the living and envy towards the dead. In such moments, the question arises: who is truly blessed – the departed or those who mourn?

As on their previous albums, the melodies here are the key to a unique soundtrack for the ongoing battle against the dark clouds that seem to gather around us all from time to time. The music of Marianas Rest, at times slow, deep and heavy, at times slightly faster and more aggressive, undoubtedly contains that X-factor of Finnish DNA that combines melancholy and beauty on a level that sends shivers down your spine every time.
