September 1943, der Zweite Weltkrieg ist auf seinem Höhepunkt und die Vorbereitungen zur Operation Avalanche, Codename für die Ladung der Alliierten im Golf von Salerno, ist in vollem Gange.

Das Liberty-Versorgungsschiff, die S.S. Lawton B. Evans unter dem Kommando von Lt. William Snow (Eric Roberts) soll, unterstütz von zwei Patrouillentorpedobooten, Material zur Bildung eines Brückenkopfes in Salerno liefern. Doch direkt vor der Küste Italiens gerät das Schiff ins Kreuzfeuer eines deutschen U-Boots und zweier gewaltiger landgestützter 88mm-Geschütze der Wehrmacht. Entgegen des Befehls von General Bradley (William Baldwin) entscheidet sich Snow zu einem Himmelfahrtskommando. Er will mit einer kleinen Einheit an Land gehen und die Geschütztürme vernichten. Hierbei wird er nicht nur von todesmutigen Marinesoldaten, sondern auch von dem mexikanischen Bordkoch (Danny Trejo) unterstützt, der noch eine ganz eigene Rechnung mit dem Nazi-Regime offen hat…
