1918, kurz vor Ende des Ersten Weltkriegs: Der britische Soldat Charles Plumpick wird nach Marville geschickt, um eine deutsche Zeitbombe zu entschärfen. In der verlassenen Stadt trifft er nur auf die Insassen des Irrenhauses, die ihn als „Herzkönig“ feiern. Zwischen fantasievoller Lebensfreude, Karneval und kindlicher Heiterkeit entdeckt Plumpick Liebe, Mut und Hoffnung. As WWI nears its end, Private Charles Plumpick is dispatched to the French village of Marville to stop a German time bomb. He discovers that the regular citizens have fled, leaving the town in the hands of escaped psychiatric patients. These “madmen” create a world of carnival, joy, and childlike cheer, crowning Plumpick their “King of Hearts.” With the help of the beautiful young Coquelicot, he not only manages to dismantle the bomb but also realizes that the sanity of the asylum might be the only refuge in a world gone mad.
