Venedig anno 1620: Dalmatinische Piratenbanden überfallen wieder und wieder die Lagunenstadt. Die venezianischen Kaufleute und Adeligen sind machtlos und das Heer der zum Schutz einberufenen Söldner korrupt und zu schwach. Nur Manrico, der Sohn des Dogen, stellt sich mit ein paar Getreuen der Piratenschar in der Maske des “Löwen von San Marco” entgegen.
