Years ago the rival circus directors Rossi and Capelli were both in love with the lion tamer Dolores. During a catastrophe in the cage Rossi was horribly disfigured while rescuing his little daughter Lolita, and was believed dead; Capelli took the orphaned child in and raised her as his own. Today Lolita is the star equestrienne of the Capelli circus, and a series of inexplicable accidents begins to strike the company. Rigging fails, animals turn, and the men who show an interest in Lolita are the ones who come to harm, until artists and audience alike speak of a phantom stalking the big top. As the investigation closes in, the troupe’s own past proves harder to escape than any outside threat. Paul May stages the material as a blend of crime thriller and atmospheric chiller against authentic circus backgrounds.
