Director’s Statement – Florian Mebes

“Why Israel of all places?” I hear this question often. Perhaps because this country acts like a magnifying glass. Because everything comes together here: religion, history, pain, hope. And because nowhere else can you feel so clearly how close opposites can come together.

During my studies, I met Arslan. He came from Baqa al-Gharbiyyeh, an Arab town in northeastern Israel. We became friends. It was the time of the second Intifada. Bombs exploded on buses, the army retaliated, and Arslan worried about his family, who lived between all fronts. When he invited me to make a film about the Arab minority, I immediately agreed. We worked in Baqa, right next to the wall to the West Bank. I remember the moment I saw it for the first time. A gray colossus of concrete, twice as high as the Berlin Wall I knew from my childhood. Behind it, another world began. There, I understood that this conflict is not just about politics, but about people, about fates, about hatred and mistrust, about grief. But also about hope and courage and the will to change something.

A few years later, my filmmaking studies took me back to Israel. I spoke with young Israelis who told me about attacks, about friends they had lost, and about a faith that had disappeared. One day, I came across a photo. Two men stood side by side at the wall—an Israeli and a Palestinian. Something about this image stayed with me. I wanted to know who they were. Their names were Rami and Bassam.

Two fathers who had lost their children in the conflict. And who decided to become friends. I wrote to them, and they replied. A short time later, I was standing at Rami’s door in West Jerusalem. After an hour of small talk, he invited me to attend a joint lecture. I listened to them talk about their journey and knew immediately: this is where a film begins. What was intended as a final project turned into a long journey. I accompanied the two of them for years, through Israel and the occupied territories, later across Europe to South Africa. I saw them in moments of hope and exhaustion, saw how they reached their limits and yet crossed them again and again.

Rami and Bassam believe in dialogue where weapons fail. Their friendship is not a symbol, but a lived reality. UNTIL WE TALK tells the story of this friendship. Of two men who found the courage to listen.

Javier Bardem about the film

„An Israeli father and a Palestinian father. Both lose their daughters, one killed by Hamas and the other by the IDF. Their choices and subsequent actions are truly admirable and exemplary. Without justice, there can be no healing. Without healing, forgiveness cannot exist. And without forgiveness, the path to peace is impossible. The documentary Until We Talk is a work that encourages taking those necessary steps — with the eternally wounded voices and hearts of Bassam and Rami. Thank you both for your profound generosity.” (Instagram, November 3, 2025)

About Bassam Aramin

Bassam Aramin, born in Sair near Hebron in 1969, was involved in the Palestinian resistance in his youth and spent seven years in an Israeli prison. There he began to question the logic of violence and seek alternative ways of resistance.

After his release, he founded the organization Combatants for Peace together with former enemies. In 2007, he lost his daughter Abir, who was shot dead by an Israeli soldier. This loss strengthened his resolve to continue on the path of nonviolent reconciliation.

Today, he is the Palestinian press spokesman for the Parents Circle.

About Rami Elhanan

Rami Elhanan, born in Jerusalem in 1949, is an Israeli graphic designer and peace activist. On September 4, 1997, he lost his thirteen-year-old daughter Smadar in a suicide bombing carried out by Palestinian attackers on Ben Yehuda Street in Jerusalem. The loss of his daughter led him to become involved in peace work. He joined the Parents Circle Families Forum, an organization that brings together Israelis and Palestinians who have lost close relatives in the conflict, and became committed to dialogue and reconciliation. In 2005, he met Bassam Aramin, whose daughter Abir was killed by an Israeli soldier two years later. Despite their different backgrounds, the two are united by their shared pain and desire to build bridges between their communities. Rami Elhanan is the former co-director of the Parents Circle and shares his story in numerous lectures and publications, including together with Bassam Aramin in Colum McCann’s bestselling novel Apeirogon, to promote understanding, compassion, and peace dialogue.

About Arab Aramin

Arab Aramin was 14 when his sister Abir was shot dead three days before his birthday. She had given him fourteen gifts beforehand. “So you won’t forget me,” she said. The loss plunged Arab into deep despair. Out of anger, he began throwing stones at Israeli soldiers and thought about taking up arms himself.

A trip with his father Bassam to Germany, where he learned about the Holocaust and the fate of the Jewish population, changed his perspective. When Bassam told him he couldn’t bear the loss of a second child, Arab realized that violence was not the answer.

Today, he is committed to dialogue and reconciliation and has named his son after his father.

About Yigal Elhanan

Yigal Elhanan was almost five years old when his sister Smadar was killed in a suicide bombing in Jerusalem shortly before his birthday. During the shiva, the seven-day mourning period, thousands of people flocked to the house. Yigal later recalled: “I thought they had all come for my birthday, but I wondered why Smadar wasn’t there.” The loss shaped his childhood.

Years later, he wanted to join the army, stand at the checkpoint and check Palestinians. Rami and especially his mother Nurit tried to dissuade him, but Yigal decided to go his own way and served three years in the Israeli army.

Today, he works with Arab at the Parents Circle summer camp, an initiative that brings Israeli and Palestinian youth together and promotes dialogue.
