Drown In Sulphur is a blackened deathcore band from Milan, Italy, that combines uncompromising intensity with dark atmospheres and a constantly evolving musical vision. Since their formation in 2014, the band has carved out a unique niche within the modern extreme metal scene, continually pushing the boundaries between deathcore, black metal, and other influences from the extreme music genre.
Drown In Sulphur garnered international attention right from the start with their first two singles, “An Epilogue to the Arrogant” and “Blackwind”. Over the years, the songs have amassed millions of views and streams, laying the foundation for a steadily growing fan base far beyond the Italian scene. Even in this early phase, the band’s musical signature was already evident: massive guitars, extreme vocals, and brutal rhythms combine with a dark, menacing atmosphere.
Following a necessary lineup change in 2020, a new chapter began for Drown In Sulphur. In 2021, the band released its first official album, “Sulphur Cvlt”, on which they further refined their sound and consistently expanded on the fusion of deathcore and dark, atmospheric extreme metal aesthetics.
Their next album, “Dark Secrets Of The Soul”, followed in 2024. The band continued to develop its musical and visual identity and once again reached an international audience. Just one year later, their third album, “Vengeance”, was released. Published in 2025, the album expressed Drown In Sulphur’s dark and rebellious worldview even more directly, while also showcasing the band’s unbroken creative drive.
Between late 2025 and early 2026, further changes within the lineup led to a period of reorientation. At the same time, the band felt the desire to fundamentally reexamine their sound: less polished, less symphonic, and instead rawer, more direct, and more authentic. Drown In Sulphur wanted, on the one hand, to continue evolving musically, but on the other hand, to rediscover the original energy from which the project had once emerged.
This search gave rise to “Strix”.
The EP marks a new phase in the evolution of Drown In Sulphur and presents a sound that is deliberately more raw and aggressive. Influences from the MySpace deathcore scene of the 2000s collide with black metal and a much stronger hardcore attitude. Symphonic elements take a back seat, while raw guitars, uncompromising rhythms, and a visceral energy take center stage.
This isn’t about a return to the past, but rather about combining the band’s original identity with a modern and distinctive musical language.

Thematically as well, “Strix” takes Drown In Sulphur deeper into a world of esotericism, mythology, and dystopian visions. Real biblical references and motifs from Masonic contexts are interwoven with the mythological figure of the Strix, forming the basis for a multi-layered, dark overarching concept.
More than a decade after their formation, Drown In Sulphur are once again undergoing a transformation. It is precisely this willingness to change that has become an essential part of their identity: The band looks back on its own roots without getting stuck there, and continually seeks new ways to combine intensity, atmosphere, and expression.
