Description
Valentin, a New Yorker, makes his way across the Atlantic to Berlin to trace his German roots. The dacha bequeathed to him by his late grandfather is not in Berlin at all, however, but in a sleepy allotment settlement in the former East of the Republic. The neighbors welcome him with open arms, a lot of curiosity and a set of rules “as thick as a phone book.
But not everyone is sympathetic to the young newcomer and looks with skepticism at the developments in what was once the “most beautiful garden” in the entire colony. Especially Gregor, a neighbor with a particular penchant for neatly trimmed hedges and nationalistic ideas, casts his eagle eye on the American – who, to make matters worse, discovers a fugitive in hiding in his attic. Adam is from Ethiopia and is in danger of being deported should he be found. The two young men strike up a friendship and a pact not to tell anyone about Adam’s existence.
Until Valentin accidentally hires a motley group of couch-surfing guests from around the world to help him spruce up the garden. With Maria, the mysterious beauty from Greece, Zorro, the charming petty criminal from Argentina, and Stefan, the Bavarian who is as clumsy as he is helpful, the hitherto so cozy garden community is thoroughly mixed up…
