Es ist der 70. Geburtstag von Matthias Clausen. Er feiert ihn im Kreise seiner Familie, die er hasst. Er weiß, alle wünschen seinen baldigen Tod und hoffen, dass dieser Geburtstag seine letzte Etappe in seinem Leben einläuten möge.

Alle warten sehnsüchtig auf das große Erbe. Clausen, Chef eines Automobilkonzerns und honoriger Bürger seiner Heimatstadt, wird mit Ehrungen überhäuft. Am Abend ist er froh, dass der Tag vorüber ist. Clausen sind seine Verwandten, seine Tochter Ottilie nebst Schwiegersohn Erich Klamroth, der die Firmenleitung innehat, sowie Sohn Wolfgang Clausen zutiefst zuwider. Er misstraut ihnen und rechnet mit allen denkbaren Gemeinheiten. Lediglich Egbert, der Jüngste in der Familie, begegnet ihm offen und ohne Falschheit. Da lernt Matthias eine junge Frau, Inken Peters, kennen. Sie ist frisch, sympathisch und akzeptiert den alten Mann so wie er ist. Er stellt die junge Dame als seine Privatsekretärin ein. Dies erschüttert die restliche Familie schwer. Dass der Alte eventuell nochmal auf Freiersfüßen wandelt, das geht ja gar nicht. Das würde ja das große Erbe für alle gefährden. Nun tritt der Hass auf den Alten offen zu Tage. Der Familienrat muss also, abgesehen von Egbert, der diese Intrigen nicht mitmacht, tagen. Man beschließt, den Alten entmündigen zu lassen. Inken Peters wird offen als Erbschleicherin beschimpft. Matthias Clausen ist empört. Seine helle Aufregung führt zu einem Herzanfall, denn seine Gesundheit ist sowieso schon angeschlagen. Inken fleht ihn an, dieses Haus voller Neid, Gier und Hass so schnell wie möglich zu verlassen. Noch bevor die beiden ihr Vorhaben in die Tat umsetzen können, stirbt Matthias Clausen an einem weiteren Schwächeanfall. Inken steht nun vor einem Scherbenhaufen.

Everyone is eagerly awaiting the great inheritance. Clausen, head of an automotive company and honorable citizen of his hometown, is showered with honors. In the evening, he is glad that the day is over. Clausen deeply resents his relatives, his daughter Ottilie and son-in-law Erich Klamroth, who heads the company, and his son Wolfgang Clausen. He distrusts them and reckons with all conceivable meanness. Only Egbert, the youngest in the family, meets him openly and without falsehood. Then Matthias meets a young woman, Inken Peters. She is fresh, sympathetic and accepts the old man as he is. He hires the young lady as his private secretary. This shakes the rest of the family badly. The fact that the old man might once again walk on his own two feet is out of the question. That would endanger the great inheritance for everyone. Now the hatred for the old man comes to the surface. So the family council has to meet, apart from Egbert, who does not take part in these intrigues. It is decided to have the old man incapacitated. Inken Peters is openly insulted as a legacy hunter. Matthias Clausen is outraged. His excitement leads to a heart attack, as his health is already failing. Inken begs him to leave this house full of envy, greed and hate as soon as possible. Before the two can put their plan into action, Matthias Clausen dies of another fainting spell. Inken is now faced with a shambles.
