The German Cinemaxx chain is celebrating “Sharkweek” in all its cinemas at the end of May with the Hai-Lights” (“Hai” is the German word for “shark”)  of cinema history. In addition to “Jaws”, “MEG” and two children’s cartoons, “Sharknado” in the new 4K 10th Anniversary version, distributed by UCM.ONE, is on the program in all 27 cinemas of the group on Friday, 31 May.

First aired in 2013, the film was produced by production house The Asylum and has since gained a wide fan base. In “Sharknado”, Tara Reid, Ian Ziering and John Heard face off against a tornado that picks up giant great white sharks and hammerheads and rains them down on Los Angeles. The film led to a franchise of popular B-movies with a total of six parts.

A gigantic hurricane that has caught a school of sharks off the Californian coast and blown them up is heading for Los Angeles. Fin (Ian Ziering), the owner of a surf bar on Long Beach, watches in horror as the storm and an almost incessant rain of gigantic sharks destroy his lifelong dream. Together with his best friend Baz (Jaason Simmons), his girlfriend (Cassie Scerbo) and the old drunk George (John Heard), he sets out armed with chainsaws and shotguns to protect his ex-wife April (Tara Reid) and his two children from these flying eating machines.

But this is a hopeless endeavor, as the storm has also pushed the seawater into the city and the group must now also protect themselves from the sharks swimming through the flooded streets.

Despite mixed reviews and its classification as a B-movie, its immense popularity led to several sequels and a wide range of merchandising products. This unexpected success impressively demonstrates the influence of social media and the appeal of an original, albeit quirky, movie concept.
