The documentary “Berlin Bytch Love” by Heiko Aufdermauer and Johannes Girke celebrated its theatrical release premiere on February 29, 2024 at the renowned Berlin arthouse cinema “Krokodil” in Prenzlauer Berg. The screening was followed by a film talk in which the filmmakers and the protagonist Sophie gave insights into the making of the film and answered questions from the large audience.
For two years, the filmmakers observed and accompanied the initially young homeless couple Sophie (15) and Dominik (17) on the streets of Berlin on their way to adulthood. Over 100 hours of footage were used to create a documentary that is told like a feature film thanks to the filmmakers’ special way of working, the visual proximity to the protagonists and its editing.
Synopsis
Sophie, 15, and Dominik, 17, have been living on the streets around Görlitzer Park for six months. Their everyday life is characterized by a struggle for survival, including sleeping in doorways, collecting bottles and begging. Despite the difficult circumstances, their relationship remains strong. The film also sheds light on Sophie’s pregnancy and Dominik’s upcoming trial for several criminal offenses.
In Germany, half a million people are considered homeless – and almost 30,000 of them are under the age of 18. In Berlin alone, around 3,000 young people live on the streets. As their status is usually unclear, no help reaches them. They are at risk of violence, illness, cold and abuse.
UCM.ONE is releasing “Berlin Bitch Love” on its film label Darling Berlin. In its 10th year of existence, Darling Berlin continues to show cinematic images of Berlin in all its facets, to which “Berlin Bitch Love” is an important contribution.
The cinema launch premiere is the first collaboration with the Krokodil arthouse cinema in the north of Berlin. The cinema, which opened in 1912, is one of the oldest still existing cinemas in Berlin and – after an eventful history – has focused on Russian and later Eastern European films since 2004. “Berlin Bitch Love” opened in selected cinemas nationwide on 29.02.2024.
