‘Battle for Castle Itter’ is a gripping, historically based war film that shows how deeply humanity can be rooted even in the darkest chapter of history. Emotional, dramatic and impressively staged – based on a true story that has long been overshadowed by the great war stories. The film, in which enemies become brothers in arms, is released today on the M-Square Pictures label.
Summary
In May 1945, as the Second World War draws to a bloody close, an almost unbelievable event takes place in a remote corner of the Tyrolean Alps: at Itter Castle, a gloomy prison for prominent French prisoners, an alliance is formed that shatters all previous notions of war, hostility and comradeship.
A small US Army task force, led by Captain John C. ‘Jack’ Lee Jr., is ordered to rescue the high-ranking French hostages – including former prime ministers, generals, cabinet members and their families – from imminent execution by the fanatical remaining troops of the Waffen SS.
But what happens next is historically unique: American soldiers join forces with a group of renegade German Wehrmacht soldiers who no longer want to be part of the Nazi madness. Former enemies fight side by side – out of humanity, conviction and the realisation that these final hours are no longer about victory or defeat, but about the lives of innocents.
The “Battle for Castle Itter” symbolises a collective uprising against tyranny and madness. In the midst of the crumbling Third Reich, a brief moment of hope, courage and solidarity emerges, carried by men who were on opposing sides yesterday.
A gripping war drama with a historical background that impressively demonstrates how humanity can survive even in times of great darkness. Authentic, moving and staged with great narrative power – inspired by a true story that has long remained outside the well-known war chronicles.
