An incredible 37 years after filming began, “Grizzly 2: Revenge“, starring the then practically unknown George Clooney, Laura Dern and Charlie Sheen – and a giant grizzly! – finally made its way to the public. UCM.ONE is releasing the film in Germany on the U3 Films Berlin label. The American action-thriller-horror film by director André Szöts is a sequel to the 1976 film “Grizzly“, directed by William Girdler and David Sheldon.
The film centres on a giant grizzly who seeks revenge after its cub is killed by poachers. It stars Steve Inwood, Louise Fletcher, John Rhys-Davies, Deborah Raffin and Deborah Foreman. Supporting roles include George Clooney, Laura Dern and Charlie Sheen, who had even turned down the lead role in “The Karate Kid” (1984) to star in this film.
Filming took place mainly in Budapest in 1983. The day after the film crew arrived in Hungary, producer Joe Proctortold his colleague Suzanne Nagy that financing for the film had not been found. He disappeared the same day, leaving 300 people behind on the set.
Suzanne Nagy kept the information to herself and desperately searched for a way to still realise the film. Fortunately, a Japanese investor showed up and put up enough money to continue filming.
There were in fact lingering doubts that “Grizzly 2” was just an industry rumour until a working copy surfaced on the internet in 2007. 37 years after the initial filming. Finally, in 2020, „Grizzly 2: The Revenge“ premiered at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival. In December 2020, it was also announced that Gravitas Ventures had acquired the film and planned to release it in cinemas and on VOD in January 2021,
And so it came to pass that “Grizzly 2 – The Revenge” can finally be viewed in Germany for the first time.
