Yusaku Shima verlässt nach sechs Jahren das Gefängnis und weiß nicht, ob von seinem früheren Leben noch etwas übrig ist. In einer Kleinstadt auf Hokkaido trifft er auf Kinya, einen tollpatschigen jungen Mann, der sich nach einem Korb kurzerhand ein Auto gekauft hat, und auf die allein reisende Akemi – zu dritt fahren sie quer über die Insel. Yusaku Shima walks out of prison after six years with no idea whether anything of his old life is left. In a small town in Hokkaido he falls in with Kinya, a clumsy young man who has just been rejected and bought a car to cheer himself up, and with Akemi, a young woman travelling alone, and the three of them set off across the island together. What begins as an awkward arrangement between strangers slowly turns into a friendship, as the miles pass and each of them is drawn into telling the truth about themselves. Yusaku gradually reveals why he was imprisoned and why he has not dared write to his wife Mitsue, to whom he sent only one message: if she is still waiting, she should hang a yellow handkerchief where he can see it from the road. The closer the journey comes to her house, the less he wants to arrive. Yoji Yamada’s road movie, inspired by the story behind the song ‘Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree’, won the very first Japan Academy Prize for Best Picture and remains one of the best-loved Japanese films of its decade.
