Finnish death-doom metal band Marianas Rest has officially announced the release of their highly anticipated fifth studio album, The Bereaved, which will be released on 16 January, 2026, via their new label, Noble Demon. At the same time, the band has released the first single and a music video for ‘The Colour of You’ – a track that sets the emotional and sonic tone for an album that may well be the band’s most personal work to date.
‘When we started composing The Colour, we didn’t think it would end up being a love story – but here we are,’ comments singer Jaakko Mäntymaa. ‘Like the entire album, this song is about personal loss. Sometimes it may be healthier to forget than to cling to memories – no matter how precious they may be.’
Guitarist Nico Mänttäri adds: “At first, we had an acoustic demo with a few string arrangements, and we weren’t quite sure what to do with it. We tried out various ideas, but nothing really struck the right chord. Then, when the idea of what the song could be about came to us, it was like a flash of inspiration – and within maybe half an hour, the arrangement was complete.“
From the dark shores of the Baltic Sea, Marianas Rest channel the deep melancholy of their homeland. Hailing from the southeastern Finnish city of Kotka, the band was formed in 2013 and has since become a force to be reckoned with in the world of melancholic death metal.
Their music is heavy and unhurried, combining elements of doom, death and post-metal into a sound that is both oppressive and beautiful.
The fifth album, ‘The Bereaved’ by Marianas Rest, is a deeply personal story about death and the many forms in which the end can appear. We encounter the band in the midst of a memorial service, tormented by questions of what should have been done or left undone, as only the bereaved know. For sometimes pity is felt for the living and envy for the dead. In such moments, the question arises: who is truly more blessed – the deceased or the mourners?
As on their previous albums, the melodies are the key to a unique soundtrack for the ongoing battle against the dark clouds that seem to gather around us all from time to time.
