“Sharknado“, which first aired on the Syfy Channel in 2013, quickly became a cultural phenomenon, not least due to the massive hype on social media. After its TV broadcast, the film was shown directly in hundreds of cinemas, with record results for a TV film. Its unique and seemingly absurd concept – a tornado that picks up sharks and drops them on Los Angeles – caught the attention of viewers and celebrities worldwide.
The film was produced by The Asylum and has since gained a broad fan base. In “Sharknado“, Tara Reid, Ian Ziering and John Heard take on a tornado that picks up giant great white sharks and hammerheads and rains them down on Los Angeles. The film led to a franchise of popular B-movies with a total of six parts.
A decade after its initial release, “Sharknado” will be released in German cinemas for the first time in 4K on November 16, 2023 on the film label M-Square Pictures in the new version with the additional title “More Sharks, More ‘Nado!” and with many new special effects.
The producers of The Asylum have created an exclusive “10th Anniversary” poster for the re-release of the film.
Despite mixed reviews and its categorisation as a B-movie, its immense popularity led to several sequels and a wide range of merchandising products. This unexpected success impressively demonstrates the influence of social media and the appeal of an original, albeit quirky, film concept.
The Asylum is a Los Angeles-based film production and distribution company known in particular for its low-budget productions and “mockbusters”, films that imitate popular blockbusters. Founded in 1997, the company has earned a reputation for the fast production of low-budget films with high entertainment value. With “Sharknado“, The Asylum achieved one of its biggest successes to date, catapulting the studio into the mainstream.
