Two decades after its theatrical release, ‘Polly Blue Eyes’ by director Tomy Wigand is making a comeback – now on the M-Square Pictures label at UCM.ONE. The film tells the story of young Polly (Susanne Bormann), who tries to start a new life after his release from prison – torn between his longing for freedom, old temptations and the search for a place in a world that has long since moved on.
Alongside her, Matthias Schweighöfer, Meret Becker, Sebastian Ströbel and Ulrich Noethen shine in a gripping drama about second chances, loyalty and the hope for a better tomorrow. With its authentic view of the years following German reunification and a strong ensemble cast, ‘Polly Blue Eyes’ is now considered an emotional document of a generation – intense, honest and touching.
Summary
Polly (Susanne Bormann) has just been released from juvenile detention and is determined to stay clean. She immediately finds a job and falls in love with Stefan (Sebastian Ströbel), a police officer. But then her dysfunctional family gets in the way. Ronny (Matthias Schweighöfer), her sister’s (Maxi Warwel) new boyfriend, proposes a supposedly sure-fire business venture to Polly’s parents (Urich Noethen and Meret Becker) in the aluminium prefabricated house business. The only thing missing is the necessary start-up capital. But Ronny has a plan for that too: a small, risk-free robbery will bring in the necessary cash.
The whole family is supposed to help, including Polly, of course. Now she has to protect her family from the police and at the same time save her love for Stefan. And somewhere in between, she also has to find her own way through life.
With his keen sense of pace and tone, Tommy Wigand perfectly captures the spirit of the early 2000s. As kino.de wrote, ‘his cheeky staging ensures thoroughly enjoyable viewing with newcomer Susanne Bormann and rising star Matthias Schweighöfer.’ Filmreporter.de also praised the film as ‘a charming crime comedy’, while welt.de highlighted its visual style: ‘It looks like a comic book that has been turned into a live-action film.’
Even two decades later, ‘Polly Blue Eyes’ still sparkles with wit, pace and joie de vivre – a piece of film history that deserves to be rediscovered. A film that proves that good stories never grow old.
