Schwarzwaldfahrt aus Liebeskummer:

The film “Schwarzwaldfahrt aus Liebeskummer” by Werner Jacobs was completely tailored to the pop star and leading actor Roy Black. That he also sang his hits there was obligatory. He sings the following songs in the film: “Hoch auf dem gelben Wagen“, “Meine Freunde sind die Pferde“, “Ach, wie ist’s möglich dann“, “Alle warten auf das Glück” and “Ich will dich nicht verlieren“. The film is now available for the first time on the label U8 Films Berlin by UCM.ONE in cooperation with moviemax in a newly digitally scanned and restored version.

Synopsis

The young architect Hannes Cremer wants to forget his professional stress on his grandfather’s farm in the Black Forest. He has just quit his job and has also given his fiancée Janine, the daughter of his boss, the slip. However, the intended rest comes to nothing, because not only his employer and his fiancée are after him, but he also meets the ‘four-leaf clover’, a quartet of ladies on their way to a wedding. Especially Renate (Barbara Nielsen), who has also just been bitterly disappointed, has captured Hanne’s heart in no time. And these are not the only surprises that await Hannes in the Black Forest.

About Werner Jacobs

Werner Jacobs was born on 24.4.1909 in Berlin. He graduated from high school in Berlin in 1928, but was unable to study due to lack of money. It was not until 1930 that he found work in a Berlin dubbing studio as a draftsman and assistant in film and sound editing. Jacobs was very good at his work and so he was soon appointed as an editor. In 1934, MGM brought Werner Jacobs to the Berlin studios for its German branch. He worked there as an editor and assistant director. He edited U.S. feature films for the German market, took care of the editing and dubbing. In 1939 he moved to Bavaria Film. In 1940 he was drafted for military service. In 1943, Jacobs fell seriously ill with a lung disease and was neither fit for war nor for work. It was not until 1949 that he was offered a position again as producer and chief editor of the newsreel “Welt im Bild“.

From 1952 Werner Jacobs worked mainly as a director. He was considered a specialist for musical films and simple comedies. His operetta adaptations “Der Bettelstudent” (1952), “Der Graf von Luxemburg” (1957), “Im weißen Rössl” (1960) and “Die lustige Witwe” (1962) are still considered outstanding today. His last musical film, his trademark, was directed in 1974 with “Schwarzwaldfahrt aus Liebeskummer” with pop star Roy Black. Werner Jacobs retired in 1975. Werner Jacobs was married to Gertrud Hart since 1945, the couple had 2 sons. Werner Jacobs died on January 24, 1999 in Munich.

About Roy Black

Gerhard Höllerich, his real name, was born in Straßberg near Augsburg on January 25, 1943. He attended elementary school in his hometown and later high school in Augsburg. He then studied business administration in Munich. To earn some pocket money as a student, he toured Augsburg’s bars as a singer in the Augsburg band “The Honky Tonks” during the 1963 carnival. In 1964, he became the singer of the group “Roy Black and his Cannons” winner in an Augsburg young talent contest. Roy Black, henceforth his stage name, was created in allusion to his black hair (Black) and the first name of his singer idol Roy Orbison. Polydor producer Hans Bertram saw this performance on television in Munich, where he was staying at the time, and immediately sought contact with Gerhard Höllerich through his old school, the Augsburg Gymnasium. On 1.9.1964 Gerhard Höllerich received a record contract with Polydor and now finally became Roy Black!

The first single he still recorded with the Cannons, but it was not a success. Only his first solo recording, “Du bist nicht allein“, reached number 4 in the German charts. With the song “Ganz in weiß” came the final breakthrough. In the release year 1965, this title was sold 2.5 million times. He was number 1 and a total of 14 weeks in the charts. He was also very successful in the following years. His singles reached 27 chart positions, 12 of them top ten and 3 number 1! Of his albums, 21 entered the charts, 6 in the Top Ten and one at No. 1. Now the German film industry also had Roy Black in focus. From 1967 he was cast in various comedies and music films. He appeared in 12 feature films and in the television series “Ein Schloss am Wörthersee“. Especially the television series, which ran from 1990-1991, was very popular and provided high ratings. His friends, colleagues and acquaintances had their problems with Roy Black‘s personality. On the one hand, he was a very empathetic and loving person, but on the other hand, he was paranoid, stingy and very often depressed and egocentric. He had great problems to reconcile the art figure Roy Black and the human being Gerhard Höllerich. He never really succeeded until his death. Gerhard Höllerich was heart-sick from birth. In 1986, after a severe heart attack, he had two new heart valves implanted in Munich. He suffered from heart failure again and again. Such a heart failure also led to his death on October 9, 1991, in his fishing lodge in Heldenstein. He was alone there and no one could help him. Speculation about a suicide was unfounded in the opinion of forensic medicine. His death was probably clearly heart failure.

About James Last

James Last was born under his civil name Hans Last on April 17, 1929 in Bremen. Since the first wife of his father Louis had died early and he was alone with three children, he married Martha Rex, his second wife. This marriage also produced three children and Hansi was the nestling! He was already very musical as a child and his parents sent him to a music academy in Frankfurt in 1943, when he was only 14 years old. The school had just started when an air raid destroyed the buildings and Hans Last was transferred to the Bückeburg Army Music School. Hansi Last learned the double bass there. In June 1945 Last became a professional musician. He had the opportunity to work as a pianist in American clubs in Bremen. Radio Bremen became aware of him and he became bass player in the Dance Orchestra of Radio Bremen when this station started broadcasting on December 23, 1945. Along the way he played, often together with his brothers, in small formations on colorful evenings, birthday parties or in pubs – mainly jazz. At the first German Jazz Festival in Frankfurt in 1953, an all-star band was formed from the best musicians. In the line-up Paul Kuhn: piano, Max Greger: tenor saxophone, Günter Fuhlisch: trombone, Fred Bunge: trumpet, Teddy Paris: drums and Hans Last: bass, a recording of this unique line-up was released by the Telefunken company.

It was a great moment for German jazz. Hans Last was successful with his dance music on Radio Bremen. In the USA at that time a special orchestra attracted attention, which consisted mainly of string players. The leader of this orchestra was the Italian Annunzio Mantovani. Hans Last was asked by the radio station to found such an orchestra. Thus the Hans Last Orchestra was born. Last was intensively involved with Mantovani’s music. The latter worked with a tape recorder in order to maximize the string sound. Last adopted the method and lo and behold, the new string orchestra sounded great. Hans Last recorded all the strings individually, duplicated this recording and recorded them in addition to the orchestra. The sound was bombastic and the audience was thrilled.

He moved to Hamburg with his wife and got a job at the large NWDR – initially as a freelancer as a bass player in the orchestra, after the separation of NDR and WDR it became a permanent position. Franz Thon was in charge of the orchestra. The orchestra accompanied many pop stars on their recordings, for example Vico Torriani, Bibi Johns or Peter Alexander. But he also worked for other pop singers like Udo Jürgens, Freddy Quinn, Lale Andersen, Wencke Myhre, Caterina Valente or Brenda Lee. Through his many arrangements, contacts were made with the record company Polydor.

Hans Last enforced his own album at Polydor and recorded the album with his own orchestra titles in his, later so popular Happy Sound. The release exceeded all expectations. The album sold magnificently. Between 1963 and 1973, Hans Last, who in the meantime had adopted the stage name James Last at Polydor‘s insistence, received no less than 100 gold records! James Last frequently went on tour with his orchestra. Especially in England he found great recognition. He loved to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, which was always sold out. James Last gave many concerts in the Royal Albert Hall. Even if the hall was fully booked, a date was always cleared for James Last. An English newspaper once said: “On the black market you can get a ticket for the final of the World Cup, or an invitation to the Queen’s garden party, but certainly not a ticket for a James Last concert”James Last toured the world in the 1990s and 2000s. He played in many cities around the globe. One of his most famous songs, “The Lonely Shepherd” was used for the television series “The Gold of the Desert“. 25 years later, Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino made the title the leitmotif in the movie “Kill Bill.” James Last‘s soundtracks for the films “Morgens um sieben ist die Welt noch in Ordnung“, “Schwarzwaldfahrt aus Liebeskummer” with Roy Black, and “Der Kapitän” with Heinz Rühmann are also famous. After only a short, serious illness, James Last died on June 9, 2015 at his estate in West Palm Beach (Florida) at the age of 86.
