“One Hundred Four” by Jonathan Schörnig has been nominated for the Grimme Award 2025 in the category “Information & Culture Competition”. The film is the only entry in this competition that was realized without the involvement of a broadcasting station – a special recognition of independent film production. The film was also recently longlisted for the 2025 Oscars. “One Hundred Four” vividly depicts the course of a sea rescue in the Mediterranean. With several cameras running in parallel, the film follows the grueling rescue of 104 people from a sinking inflatable boat – person by person, step by step.
The situation escalates when the Libyan coast guard shows up. After the rescue, the rescued and the crew have to spend days at sea because none of the Mediterranean states allows them to dock. It is only after a severe storm that the ship reaches a European port.
The film addresses the dramatic reality of the most dangerous escape route in the world, where thousands of people die every year. “One Hundred Four” focuses on the systematic human rights violations of EU border policy, including illegal pushbacks, Frontex’s support for the Libyan coast guard and the obstruction of private sea rescue organizations.

Mit dem Auftauchen der Libyschen Küstenwache spitzt sich die Lage zu. Tagelang harren die Geretteten und die Crew auf hoher See aus, da kein Mittelmeerland ihnen erlaubt anzulegen. Erst nach einem schlimmen Sturm erreicht das Schiff einen europäischen Hafen.
