An Heiligabend erhält die junge Marie von ihrem Onkel Drosselmeier ein ganz besonderes Geschenk: einen geschnitzten Nussknacker. Noch in derselben Nacht erwacht das Spielzeug zum Leben, und Marie erfährt seine Geschichte – er ist Prinz Hans, den der Fluch der Mäusekönigin in Holz verwandelt hat. Um den Bann zu brechen, muss er deren Sohn, den Mäusekönig, besiegen, der nun das Reich der Puppen bedroht. Marie folgt dem Nussknacker in eine magische Welt, in der Spielzeug marschiert, Mäuse in ganzen Armeen angreifen und nichts die Größe hat, die es haben sollte. Unterwegs begegnen ihr sonderbare Verbündete, und sie erfährt, wie es überhaupt zu dem Fluch kam. Die Zeichentrickverfilmung des Klassikers von E.T.A. Hoffmann ist mit Motiven aus Tschaikowskis berühmter Ballettmusik unterlegt.

On Christmas Eve the young girl Clara receives a very special present from her uncle Drosselmeier: a carved nutcracker. That same night the toy comes alive and Clara learns his story – he is Prince Hans, transformed into wood by the Mouse Queen’s curse. To break the spell he must defeat her son, the Mouse King, who now threatens the kingdom of the dolls. Clara follows the nutcracker into a magical world in which toys march, mice attack in armies and nothing is quite the size it should be. Along the way she meets curious allies and hears how the curse came about in the first place. The animated adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale is set to motifs of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet score.
