This CBS comedy from 1966 turns the manhunt formula of ‚The Fugitive‘ into a half-hour farce. Buddy Overstreet, an unremarkable accountant, picks up the wrong conversation in a steam bath and learns that the gangster Mr. D intends to have someone killed. Because he also catches the code phrase ‚Chicken Little‘, he becomes the syndicate’s most wanted witness overnight. Buddy takes flight and turns up in a new town, a new job and a new disguise almost every week, from a farm hand to a hotel employee. Mr. D’s men are always a step behind him, and their clumsiness is as much a source of comedy as Buddy’s improvised escapes. The series was cancelled after a single season, and jazz trumpeter Jack Sheldon in the title role became its enduring cult attraction.
