Im inneren Kreis | In the inner circle

by Hannes Obens & Claudia Morar

Iris P. had close friendships and intimate relationships with people she spied on. As undercover investigator “Iris Schneider”, she spent years researching the left-wing scene and the “Rote Flora” in Hamburg. After their media-effective exposure in 2014, two more undercover investigators flew to Hamburg within 18 months: Maria B. (cover name “Maria Block”) and Astrid O. (aka Astrid Schütt). They also worked with similar methods as Iris P. and were undercover in the left scene for many years. And in idyllic Heidelberg, the policeman Simon B. enrolled in 2010 specifically at the university to spy on left-wing students who had not dreamed of getting into the crosshairs of state surveillance.

Impressively, the protagonists tell their stories from very different perspectives. Supervised people from the environment of the “Red Flora” in Hamburg and young students from Heidelberg, as well as politically and legally responsible persons have their say, as the former Attorney General Kay Nehm.

Back to Nothing

by Miron Zownik

Photographer, author and filmmaker Miron Zownir’s second feature film, “Back to Nothing”, was shot on abandoned, dilapidated locations in Berlin. A group of freaks subsist as city nomads in an uncontrolled ghetto, doomed for demolition. Hell breaks loose when their last hide out – a condemned factory complex – is to be knocked down. Kongo, Strasser, Bobby and Jackie are heading out – back to nothing. Zownir’s stark b/w imagery depicts an erratic, immoral shadow world without hope or mercy, that forces his protagonists to the lowest level of survival.

As in his praised b/w photography work, Zownir’s cinematic vision focuses on the hopeless, lonely, beaten and left-behind drifting through ruined, derelict urban landscapes. For “Back to Nothing” he teamed up with DOP Philip Koepsell. They created raw, rare images of Berlin’s seedy underbelly, deeply infested with nightmarish melancholia.

Anhedonia

by Patrick Siegfried Zimmer

The film takes place in 2020. According to the narrator, billions of people worldwide are victims of “digital, media, narcissistic, hedonistic, careerist and consumer-oriented overstimulation and suggestion by the establishment.” Hundreds of millions of westerners suffer from epidemic anhedonia, the inability to feel joy, lust, love and fun. Two prototypes of this suffering are the inseparable “aristocrat sons” Franz and Fritz Freudenthal, who had to witness the staged death of their famous actor-parents in their childhood and then grew up in a caring nudist sect. Although they have material resources beyond imagination, their lives are empty and boring. Without sense and purpose they let themselves be carried by slaves reintroduced on litters through the area. The new unique pleasure stimuli therapy of the world famous psychotherapist Prof. Dr. med. Immanuel Young attracts them, from whom they expect the solution of their problem. At his institution, peace of mind on the coast of Pellworms, they hope to defeat their illness. His four-phase therapy, which is characterized by surprising elements, ends in the writing of a wish list, which demonstrates the stupidity of humanity, according to a recurring film director in a meta-level.

Radio Silence | On Air

by Carsten Vauth

Doc Rock works as a radio presenter on the pirate channel ” Night Hawk ”. The most delicate theme of his program is the so-called Nachtschlitzer, an ultra-brutal serial killer who keeps the city in suspense. His favorite victims are young, beautiful women, whom he separates neatly and in the living body, the limbs. After their agonizing death, he transforms them into a human vase by putting a long-stemmed rose deep in their mouths. Doc does not want to understand why this abysmal evil killer is still running around freely. And so he provokes the police over the air with the question, why one can not prevent that madman slaughtering his next victim.

A few moments later, in the basement of his house, a call reaches him in the studio – the night slicer himself is on the line. And Doc Rock proposes an equally perfidious and murderous game: If Doc manages to prevent him from committing another murder during his radio show, he would be willing to actually let his hostage live. Now the moderator has to act fast. And he can not afford a mistake. Because the killer is much closer to him than he would have thought in his wildest dreams – and the chances of escaping him, go to zero.

Berlinized

by Lucian Busse

Berlin in the 90s – In addition to the great political upheavals and the commercialized technoculture, a now rather forgotten parallel universe shaped the lifestyle of the city: the world of cellar bars and backyard creatives.

In the free houses and apartments in Berlin-Mitte celebrated after the fall of the wall, a scene of very different young people a carefree freedom. Whether a project was promising or not – no matter – you lived from one event to the next experiment and operated the Ent-Establishment of art and market quite playful.

The film “Berlinized” describes this special way of life in a reflexive journey through time to Berlin in the mid-90s. The filmmaker Lucian Busse, himself an active protagonist of that time, used his camera to document the city’s transformation, the art scene, clubs, concerts and construction sites, where the open spaces were filled with ever new impersonal office buildings.

The Dead 2: India

by Howard J. Ford & Jonathan Ford

The American engineer Nicholas Burton (Joseph Millson) actually takes care of the maintenance of wind turbines. After the outbreak of the zombie apocalypse, he learns on the phone from his Indian wife Ishani Sharma (Meenu Mishra) that she is pregnant. To liberate Ishani from the slums of Mumbai, Nicholas embarks on a 300-mile journey where voracious zombies want to keep him alive. However, Burton is able to break free from dangerous situations with sometimes fancy machine designs and, if necessary, brutal armed violence. With the help of a little Indian boy who serves as his navigator, he may yet, in all likelihood, manage to save his lover with the unborn child in his stomach …

Having just arrived in Berlin, numerous young men are already trying to find Alexandra’s favor: the dubious Yugoslav local owner Bogdan, a young industrialist and the Italian photographer Timo. Evening invitations, theater visits, stroll through the night scene and parties are replacing each other.

The Endless Night | Die endlose Nacht

by Will Tremper

Mist over Tempelhof. “Due to bad weather conditions, all flights to West Germany have to be canceled today. Likewise, before tomorrow morning not to count on landings in Berlin-Tempelhof. The next announcement will be tomorrow morning. “At any other airport in the world, such an announcement would cause trouble, but there would be alternatives. You could go by train, you could use the nearest airport. In Berlin, such opportunities do not exist. Berlin, a metropolis with 2.2 million inhabitants, has no more than ten rail connections per day, and between Berlin and West Germany lies the territory of the GDR, which not everyone can safely cross.

Fog over Tempelhof, which brings with it a lot of problems for a number of passengers …
