With her films from the 1970s at the latest, the actress proved that she had long since emerged from the candyfloss world of Sissi films. At that time, she had already been working for 15 years mainly in France, where she is still counted among the grandes dames of cinema. Renowned directors from <strong>Luchino Visconti<\/strong>, <strong>Claude Sautet<\/strong>, <strong>Bertrand Tavernier<\/strong> to <strong>Costa-Gavras<\/strong> have had her in front of the camera and her film partners of this period are the <em>&#8220;Who&#8217;s Who&#8221;<\/em> of French cinema. She won her first <strong>C\u00e9sar<\/strong> in 1975 for her role in the film &#8220;<strong>That Important Thing: Love<\/strong>&#8220;.[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;67740&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;67691&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>&#8216;s life was turbulent and marked by many tragic strokes of fate &#8211; at the latest with the accidental death of her son in 1981, she seemed to have lost all her footing. Her heavy consumption of alcohol and tablets, a constant companion for years, got more and more out of control.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong> died under circumstances that remain unclear to this day. Her partner at the time, the French film producer <strong>Laurent P\u00e9tin<\/strong>, found her slumped lifeless at her desk in the early morning, with an unfinished handwritten letter lying next to her. The official cause of death was heart failure, but an autopsy was never performed and so suicide rumours quickly circulated.\u00a0<span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong> was buried in the cemetery of the small village of Boissy-sans-Avoir, her last place of residence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_separator][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\">Biography of Romy Schneider<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0was born on 23 September 1938 in Vienna under her civil name\u00a0<strong>Rosemarie Magdalena Albach-Retty<\/strong>\u00a0as the daughter of the actor couple\u00a0<strong>Wolf Albach-Retty<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Magda Schneider<\/strong>. Her paternal ancestors belonged to the famous Austrian acting dynasty\u00a0<strong>Albach-Retty<\/strong>. This extended back to her great-great-grandfather\u00a0<strong>Adolf Retty<\/strong>\u00a0(born 1821).\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0grew up at K\u00f6nigssee, in the village of Sch\u00f6nau, and attended primary school there from 1944. In 1949 she transferred to the girls\u2019 boarding school Schloss Goldenstein near Salzburg. There she often took part in school theatre performances, where she discovered her passion for acting. In July 1953, after graduating from school she was to attend an art school in Cologne, as her talent for painting had been discovered.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;69651&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;69657&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<br \/>\nIn favour of her first film role in \u201c<strong>When the White Lilacs Bloom Again<\/strong>\u201c, she renounced her school attendance.\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0got this role at the suggestion of her mother\u00a0<strong>Magda Schneider<\/strong>, who took the leading role in the film. In addition to\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>G\u00f6tz George<\/strong>\u00a0also made his film debut in this film. After a few more trivial films, she played a role in the remake of the 1924\u00a0<strong>Murnau<\/strong>\u00a0classic \u201c<strong>The Last Man<\/strong>\u201d alongside\u00a0<strong>Hans Albers<\/strong>, which also attracted attention from the critics.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<br \/>\nHer international breakthrough came with the \u201c<strong>Sissi<\/strong>\u201d trilogy that followed. Soon everyone in the film world knew who\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0was. Her stepfather\u00a0<strong>Herbert Blatzheim<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Magda Schneider<\/strong>\u2018s second husband, took over her management from 1955. He urged her to make the second\u00a0<strong>Siss<\/strong>i film, a role\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0actually no longer wanted to play.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<br \/>\n<strong>Romy Schneider\u00a0<\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\">was looking for artistically demanding roles. Nevertheless, she agreed, and so \u201c<strong>Sissi, the Young Empress<\/strong>\u201d was made in 1956. In 1957 she succeeded for the first time in slipping out of the role of the lovely, well-behaved German model girl from the Heimatfilm romance. In the film \u201c<strong>The Girl and the Legend<\/strong>\u201d she played the daughter of a cotton spinner from the lower class.\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">It was the first role\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0had chosen for herself.<\/span><br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;69654&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;69648&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/3&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;69660&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<br \/>\nWhen she learned that her stepfather\u00a0<strong>Herbert Blatzheim<\/strong>\u00a0had turned down several film offers, including the remakes \u201c<strong>The Three from the Filling Station<\/strong>\u201c, \u201d\u00a0<strong>The Congress Dances<\/strong>\u201d as well as a film offer from the famous Spanish-Mexican film director\u00a0<strong>Luis Bu\u00f1uel<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0became furious. Moreover, an offer from Hollywood failed because of the conditions set by Blatzheim.\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0now took her acting future into her own hands. Her next film, \u201c<strong>M\u00e4dchen in Uniform<\/strong>\u201c, with many great actresses like\u00a0<strong>Lilli Palmer<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Therese Giehse<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Sabine Sinjen<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Christine Kaufmann<\/strong>\u00a0brought her the longed for recognition as a character actress.\u00a0With the film \u201c<strong>Christine<\/strong>\u201d came the complete turnaround in her life.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<br \/>\nAfter the end of the shooting she left Germany together with her film partner\u00a0<strong>Alain Delon<\/strong>\u00a0and went to Paris. There she shot three more movies in 1959, \u201c<strong>Mademoiselle Ange<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c<strong>Die sch\u00f6ne L\u00fcgnerin<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Magnificent Sinner<\/strong>\u201c. In the next years\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0acted mainly in Paris. One of her theatre directors was\u00a0<strong>Luchino Visconti<\/strong>, from whom she learned a lot. In 1962, also under\u00a0<strong>Visconti<\/strong>\u2018s direction, she took on another film role in \u201c<strong>Boccaccio 70<\/strong>\u201c. Now followed several roles in blockbusters such as \u201c<strong>The Trial<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c<strong>The Victors<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c<strong>The Cardinal<\/strong>\u201c.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=&#8221;67647&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][vc_column_text]<br \/>\nIn the 60s and 70s\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0was at the height of her career. In 1963 she made the comedy \u201c<strong>Good Neighbor Sam<\/strong>\u201d in Hollywood alongside\u00a0<strong>Jack Lemmon<\/strong>. Privately, however, 1963 was a bad year. Her relationship with\u00a0<strong>Alain Delon<\/strong>\u00a0fell apart. When she returned from the USA, he had already moved out of the flat they shared. She then attempted suicide.\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0then took time off. It was not until a year later that she shot the film \u201c<strong>L\u2019Enfer<\/strong>\u201d with the old master\u00a0<strong>Henry-Georges Clouzot<\/strong>. But bad luck stayed with her, the film was never finished. First her film partner\u00a0<strong>Serge Reggiani<\/strong>\u00a0fell seriously ill, then director\u00a0<strong>Clouzot<\/strong>\u00a0suffered a heart attack. In 1965 followed one of her most successful films, \u201c<strong>What\u2019s New, Pussycat?<\/strong>\u201c, based on a script by\u00a0<strong>Woody Allen<\/strong>.\u00a0During a visit to Germany she met the actor and director Harry Meyen, they became a couple. During the filming of the movie \u201c<strong>Triple Cross<\/strong>\u201d in 1966,\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0und\u00a0<strong>Harry Meyen<\/strong>\u00a0married. Their son David was born in December of the same year.<br \/>\n[\/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;69006&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_single_image image=&#8221;68994&#8243; img_size=&#8221;full&#8221; alignment=&#8221;center&#8221; onclick=&#8221;link_image&#8221;][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>In the following two years\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0devoted herself exclusively to her duties as a wife and mother. It was not until 1968 that\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0began filming again. In 1969 she acted again in the film \u201c<strong>The Swimming Pool<\/strong>\u201d at the side of her ex-lover\u00a0<strong>Alain Delon<\/strong>. The film became one of her greatest successes. A series of films followed in the 70s, including such well-known and successful ones as \u201c<strong>Love at the Top<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c<strong>The Infernal Trio<\/strong>\u201c, \u201c<strong>The Old Gun<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>That Most Important Thing: Love<\/strong>\u201c. In 1975,\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0divorced\u00a0<strong>Harry Meyen<\/strong>. At this time\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0was already in a relationship with\u00a0<strong>Daniel Biasini<\/strong>, her private secretary, whom she married the same year. After the birth of her daughter\u00a0<strong>Sarah<\/strong>, she made one of her most successful films ever in 1978 with the film \u201c<strong>A Simple Story<\/strong>\u201c. From then on, however, her life only went downhill. Her ex-husband\u00a0<strong>Harry Meyen<\/strong>\u00a0hanged himself in 1979.\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0lost many of her fans\u2019 sympathies with the film \u201c<strong>Death Watch<\/strong>\u201c, the story of a sick, doomed woman who sold the rights to her death to a television company for broadcast. This film won some awards but failed with the audience. During the shooting of three other films there were repeated problems because of\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u2018s excessive alcohol consumption. She appeared drunk on the set several times or did not appear at all.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<br \/>\nOn 5 July 1981, her son\u00a0<strong>David<\/strong>\u00a0was killed in an accident. This event threw her completely off course. Her second marriage with\u00a0<strong>Daniel Biasini<\/strong>\u00a0was at an end and she divorced him.\u00a0<strong>Romy Schneider<\/strong>\u00a0also had to undergo a serious kidney operation. Her complete downfall was prevented by her new lover\u00a0<strong>Laurent Petin<\/strong>. He gave her some stability again. Director\u00a0<strong>Jacques Rouffio<\/strong>\u00a0persuaded her to make another film, \u201c<strong>The Passerby<\/strong>\u201c. It was to be her last film. On the night of 29 May 1982, she died as a result of excessive tablet consumption.
