September 1943, the Second World War is at its height and preparations for Operation Avalanche, code name for the Allied charge in the Gulf of Salerno, are in full swing.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The Liberty supply ship, the S.S. Lawton B. Evans under the command of Lt. William Snow (Eric Roberts<\/strong>), is to deliver material to form a bridgehead at Salerno, supported by two patrol torpedo boats. But just off the coast of Italy, the ship is caught in the crossfire of a German U-boat and two massive land-based 88mm Wehrmacht guns. Against the orders of General Bradley (William Baldwin<\/strong>),[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Snow decides to go on a suicide mission. He wants to go ashore with a small unit and destroy the gun turrets. The ship SS Lawton B. Evans<\/span><\/p>\n

The SS Lawton B. Evans, featured in this film, was launched in 1943 and was a “Liberty Ship” The “Liberty Ships” were mass produced in the USA. The British concept was adopted by the United States because of its simple and inexpensive construction. Mass produced on an unprecedented scale, the Liberty Ship became a symbol of US industrial achievement during the war. The class was designed to fulfil British orders for transports to replace lost ships.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
