\nIn a world overrun by the undead, human civilization has almost completely collapsed. A small group of survivors\u2014composed of scientists and soldiers\u2014has barricaded itself inside an underground bunker in Florida. Contact with the outside world has long since been severed, and supplies and medicine are growing increasingly scarce. Inside the bunker, two irreconcilable worldviews clash. On one side is a team of scientists led by Dr. Sarah Bowman and the eccentric Dr. Logan. Logan argues that the undead do not need to be destroyed at all costs, but can be tamed and civilized through conditioning. Logan cites the zombie \u201cBub\u201d as evidence for his theory; Bub seems to remember his former life and even shows signs of empathy. On the other side are the soldiers led by the increasingly paranoid Captain Rhodes, who takes control following the death of the previous commander. The authoritarian Rhodes and his men are tasked with protecting the researchers, but they view their experiments with open contempt. They demand quick, practical results\u2014or the destruction of all captured undead. George A. Romero’s “Dead” trilogy<\/span><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]George A. Romero<\/strong>\u2019s legendary \u201cDead\u201d<\/strong> series is considered the foundation of modern horror cinema. With his groundbreaking masterpiece \u201cNight of the Living Dead\u201d<\/strong> (1968), Romero not only created the iconic figure of the slow-moving, flesh-hungry undead, but also used the horror genre from the very beginning as a sharp allegory of social criticism. The visually raw, black-and-white opener encapsulates the fears of the late 1960s\u2014from the Vietnam War to racial tensions in the U.S. Ten years later, Romero delivered another masterpiece with \u201cDawn of the Dead\u201d<\/strong> (1978). By trapping the survivors of the zombie apocalypse in a massive, abandoned shopping mall, he weaves macabre horror with a spot-on satire of Western consumer society. With \u201cDay of the Dead\u201d<\/strong> (1985), Romero concludes his original trilogy. In an underground bunker, science and the military clash, highlighting the dangers of rising militarism in the face of a dwindling human civilization. Day of the Dead – A History of Censorship<\/span><\/h3>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]George A. Romero\u2019s \u201cDay of the Dead\u201d<\/strong> (1985) first hit German theaters in 1987 under the distribution title \u201cZombie 2 \u2013 Das letzte Kapitel\u201d<\/strong> and, over the course of four decades, repeatedly came under scrutiny by German youth protection authorities and the criminal justice system. In no other country did Romero\u2019s masterpiece suffer such severe censorship cuts as it did in Germany. Even at the time of its theatrical release, the FSK refused to approve the uncut version. In order to be shown in theaters with an 18+ rating, several minutes of highly violent scenes had to be cut. Even on VHS, only a heavily edited version was released; despite the removal of nearly all violent scenes, it was initially placed on the index and shortly thereafter seized nationwide on charges of glorifying violence (Section 131 of the German Criminal Code). For decades, the uncensored version was effectively banned in Germany and could neither be sold nor publicly screened.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t until early 2026 that the legal situation changed: All seizures were lifted, and the title was removed from the index. The FSK re-evaluated the film and classified the uncut original version as \u201cNot Approved for Minors\u201d (18 and older).
