The new film by director Klaus H\u00e4r\u00f6<\/b> tells a moving story about civil courage, responsibility and humanity – based on historical events that have long been overshadowed by the European culture of remembrance. \u201cNie Allein<\/strong><\/b>\u201d celebrated its world premiere <\/b>on November 13, 2024 as the opening film of the Baltic Competition at the P\u00d6FF – Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival<\/b>. This was followed by the US premiere <\/b>on January 4, 2025 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival<\/b>, where the film was one of only six entries invited to the prestigious Modern Masters section and received the Best of Fest – Top Films Audience Award<\/em><\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\nSynopsis<\/span><\/p>\n

During the Second World War, many German Jews seek refuge far away. Some of them also hope for a new beginning in Finland. However, Finland’s alliance with Nazi Germany threatens to escalate the situation when the Jewish refugees are forcibly deported to German labor camps. Abraham Stiller, a respected member of the Jewish community in Finland, cannot stand idly by. The businessman does everything in his power to accommodate the escaped Jews in his production facilities in order to save them, but in doing so he increasingly reaches his own limits.<\/p>\n

\nAbout director Klaus H\u00e4r\u00f6<\/span><\/p>\n

Klaus H\u00e4r\u00f6<\/strong> <\/b>(*1971 in Finland) studied directing at the University of Art and Design Helsinki.<\/strong> He made his feature film debut in 2002 with the children’s film \u201cElina<\/strong>\u201d, which was Finland’s contender for an Oscar<\/strong> nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category in 2004. Klaus H\u00e4r\u00f6<\/strong> became best known for \u201cMy Sailor, My Love<\/strong>\u201d (2022) and \u201cThe Fencer<\/strong>\u201d (2015), which was nominated for a Golden Globe<\/strong> and was again on the Oscar<\/strong> shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film.

\nVille Virtanen<\/strong>, known from films such as\u201cPriest of Evil<\/strong>\u201d,\u201cA Respectable Comedy<\/strong>\u201d and\u201cBetter Times<\/strong>\u201d, takes on the leading role of Abraham Stiller. His wife, the non-Jewish Vera, is played by Nina Hukkinen<\/strong>. Other central roles are played by Hannu-Pekka Bj\u00f6rkman<\/strong> as the then Finnish Finance Minister V\u00e4in\u00f6 Tanner and Carl-Kristian Rundman<\/strong> as Interior Minister Toivo Horelli. Kari Hietalahti<\/strong> plays Arno Anthoni, the newly appointed head of the state police. The Austrian Rony Herman<\/strong> plays the Jew Georg Kollmann, while Naemi Latzer<\/strong> and Rafael Simson Gouveia portray his wife Janka, who was deported in November 1942, and their son Franz. Rain Tolk<\/strong>, European Shooting Star of 2007<\/em>, can be seen as Heinrich Huppert, who was also deported, and Ruben Tolk<\/strong> plays his son Kurt. Lukas Walcher<\/strong> appears in a smaller role as a German officer, Alexander Jagsch<\/strong> plays Heinrich M\u00fcller. Jouko Puolanto<\/strong> takes on the role of Finnish Prime Minister Johan Wilhelm Rangell. Satu Tuuli Karhu<\/strong> plays the journalist Elina Sana, who interviews Stiller for a book in 1972.
