Swedish dark metal trio The Vice<\/b> has announced the release of their upcoming five-track EP, \u201cA Great Unrest<\/b>\u201d, which will be released on March 7th <\/b>via Noble Demon<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Following their successful last album \u201cDead Canary Run<\/b>\u201d (2024, Noble Demon<\/b>), The Vice<\/b> have embarked on a deliberate journey to release a series of EPs. The addition of Joel \u00d6hman<\/b>, a long-time collaborator, has transformed the band into a finely tuned quartet, enriching their sound with fresh perspectives and innovative approaches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]The first piece from this new chapter, \u201cA Great Unrest<\/b>\u201d, shows the growth in full and reinforces every inch of the musical foundation of blackened metal, ambient pop and unbridled rock n’ roll. The five tracks \u2013 three new, a cover of \u201c1 Sun<\/b>\u201d by Miley Cyrus<\/b> and a newly arranged version of \u201cWelcome The Storm<\/b>\u201d from the last album \u2013 were recorded in the fall of 2024 at Studio Underjord<\/b> (Skraeckoedlan<\/b>, Magna Carta Cartel<\/b>, Haystack<\/b>, among others) in rural Sweden. Fresh off writing and recording an entire album, this EP was the perfect way to musically break the \u201cboundaries\u201d that can arise when working on a truly unified piece of art.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

And although the diversity of the tracks is not quite at Fantomas level<\/i>, sound engineer and studio owner Joona Hassinen <\/b>has really done his best to give the EP a coherent sound. ‘A Great Unrest<\/b>‘ sounds a bit lighter, but also harder than ‘Dead Canary Run<\/b>‘, with an electrified, distorted tension that runs through the whole album.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Guitarist Rickard <\/b>on the song: \u201cTo me, \u2018A Great Unrest\u2019 is everything that makes The Vice so special, in its purest form. A damn dark riff, a couple of choruses bursting with wildness, passion and rebellion, and a final act that releases all the pent-up tension in a beautiful yet highly threatening way.<\/i> All in less than three and a half minutes. I really think we’ve hit the nail on the head with this.<\/i>\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Regarding the theme of the EP, the band adds: \u201cThematically, there were no different ideas and thoughts than usual when we entered the studio. The Vice is about restlessness, rebellion, those mixed feelings of unease and ecstasy when you’re balancing on the last few centimeters of the edge and on the verge of falling into the void. It always has been and always will be.<\/i> Some songs here and there have more specific topics, but in general they are reflections and ideas about this existence from a rather calm, collected perspective, but one that is always prepared and anticipates the moment when the tension breaks and the uncertain madness begins.<\/em> At some point, the visuals like the cover, the music video, the title, etc. started to lean into a kind of Cold War aesthetic.<\/em> This was absolutely not intentional, never discussed, and not something we would inherently draw from. Certainly some things led to others, but at least some of it feels like the music just has an inherent mood. A cold, metallic, dark, post-war mood.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
