\nThe film “Tr\u00fcmmerm\u00e4dchen – Germany Year Zero<\/strong>” (German title: “Tr\u00fcmmerm\u00e4dchen – Die Geschichte der Charlotte Schumann<\/strong>“), for which director and screenwriter Oliver Kracht<\/strong> was already awarded the Thomas Strittmatter Prize<\/strong> at the Berlinale<\/strong> in 2019, celebrated its world premiere at the 55th Hof Film Festival<\/strong> in 2021, where, in addition to the Bild-Kunst-F\u00f6rderpreis<\/strong> for the “Best Costume Design and Best Production Design”<\/em><\/strong>, it received a “Special Mention”<\/em><\/strong> from the jury of the F\u00f6rderpreis Neues Deutsches Kino<\/strong>.

Synopsis<\/h3>\n

Germany, 1946. Hunger, rubble, returning soldiers. Charlotte is pregnant, but her beloved homecomer wants neither her nor his child. To win him over and escape the impending disgrace, she enrols in the “Fr\u00e4ulein Course” run by actress Gloria Deven, who was an aspiring film starlet under fascism and is now banned from working.<\/p>\n

But Gloria, with her merciless teaching, is not interested in reviving the girls’ coquetry, which had become unnecessary during the war. Instead, she awakens in Lotte a longing for something that has been denied her for too long: Freedom.[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”63541″ img_size=”full” onclick=”link_image”][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201eTr\u00fcmmerm\u00e4dchen \u2013 Germany Year Zero<\/strong>\u201c (Working title: “Die Geschichte des\u00a0Tr\u00fcmmerm\u00e4dchens Charlotte Schumann<\/strong>“) tells the story of young women’s self-empowerment against the backdrop of the destruction of World War II in intense, striking images and is a fervent plea for community and sisterhood. The English translation or the German word “Tr\u00fcmmerm\u00e4dchen”<\/em> is “Rubble Girl”.<\/em><\/p>\n

Screenwriter and director Oliver Kracht<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Oliver Kracht<\/strong> was born in La Paz in 1981. After graduating from high school, he studied philosophy at the University of Potsdam<\/strong>. “We, the team and cast, are grateful that we were able to produce this film largely without editorial influence. Only this way was it possible for every department to work freely regardless of the consequences. After all, we wanted to produce a theatrical film that radically and uncompromisingly questions whether we have really made so much progress in terms of patriarchy and\/or fascist structures since 1946. I think we have succeeded in achieving this.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”63559″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]The long reverberating, provocative story of emancipation set against the backdrop of a new beginning in the ruins of World War II features an impressive Laura Balzer<\/strong> (nominated for the G\u00f6tz George Young Talent Award<\/strong> at the First Steps Awards<\/strong>) in the lead role, who, with the support of a terrific, predominantly female ensemble (including Valery Cheplanova<\/strong>, Lena Urzendowsky<\/strong>), takes us on the emotional journey of the character scarred by trauma and oppression.[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Jury statement at the International Hof Film Festival for the Bild-Kunst-F\u00f6rderpreis 2021:<\/h3>\n

“Sabrina Kr\u00e4mer and Hannah Ebenau were awarded for the well researched and well realised costumes of the 1940s: The overall concept of the film allows for detours into other times, which were very sensitively and artfully inserted into the cinematic period without imposing themselves in the process. The two costume designers succeeded in creating an artistic arch through colours, cuts and jewellery and in depicting a convincing development of the individual characters with these creative means.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Yvonne Leuze’s strong conception draws the black and white world of a destroyed and misogynous society, which appears fragmentarily in the infinity of an abstract-dark space. Sophisticated building constructions give rise to mountains of rubble and streetscapes that explore the tightrope walk between the real and scenic reduction. In contrast to this are the elaborate and lovingly decorated sets of the “Proto” theatre: a place of painful confrontation and liberating self-empowerment.
